Confession of a wonky thumb

Ok, I have something to admit, something that I tried hiding for years and year but it’s time I finally come clean with it. I have… I can’t say it…. I am…. hmmm… I’m a freak. I have something called Brachydactyly Type D (BDD).

What the heck is that? I like to think of it as strange dinosaur disease, yes, I’m actually a dinosaur. Hehe, now I’m sure you’re confused…. unless you know what BDD is then I will give you a high5! *High5*

Basically BDD means that the distal phalanx of the thumb alone is shortened, in other words the nail bed of my thumbs is wider than it’s long, weird eh?

For so long I thought I was the only one with these thumbs, I thought I was just a freak of nature but then one night I had a dream. Basically in the that dream I had googled clubbed thumb. I was fascinated by all the results that came up. When I eventually woke up I did just like in my dream and googled it. I learned a very important lesson that day, I’m still a freak but with cool thumbs. About 2% of the population has the same kind of thumbs as I do and many of them only learned later in life that they are not the only ones with cool thumbs.

First time ever taking a picture of my thumb!

Growing up I was very self conscious of my thumbs, I didn’t like being different. But now I often use them as a conversation starter. Usually I can get a laugh out of it or at least an awkward stare.

I met someone the other day who had the same kind of thumbs and it was like an instant connection! It was really awesome! It was instant joy!!!!

Embrace your differences as they are what make you you. Don’t be afraid to be different!

  1. Celine! I knew someone, almost same thumb with you, I remember my classmate in high school when I read and saw the picture. Yeah, I agree ,we have to love who we are or how different we are from others .thanks. God bless!

    1. It’s kinda funny how we try our best to fit in but then we forget that others are trying to fit in as well. And by doing so we forget who we are. No one actually fits in as we’re all completely different. It’s our uniqueness that makes each and every one of us so awesome! Juvy, peace!
