Mission Trip no-no

I cannot stand when people go on two week mission trips to third world countries to work in an orphanage. I know this most likely sounds selfish but I will explain.

I want you to put yourself in the shoes of an orphan. At the age of 1 years your father passed away in a car accident and your mother took care of you as long as she could. Money was becoming an issue and so not long after she dropped you off in the middle of the night on the steps of an orphanage. You have never seen you mother since that night. The sisters running the orphanage graciously took you in as their own.

As you’re growing up you have those broken memories of your parents but not enough to be at peace with the situation. You are staying with 50 other kids between the ages of 1 and 17. Every two weeks people come in to meet you. These people are usually from a different country and have many questions. You answer their questions, play with them but after two weeks it’s time for them to go back home. You thank them for visiting and beg them to come back knowing full well you won’t ever see them again. Another week, another group of people to meet, the same questions being asked and still no one to open up to.

Cowabonga!

I never thought I would say this but I actually love working on the farm. (I hope my father isn’t reading this)

Yes, I know I haven’t been here long but I already feel comfortable and as though I’m learning quite fast. You’re probably thinking ‘dude there’s like not much to learn on a farm’. And this is where I faint. You can learn a much or as little as you want.

Got a new tablet so now I’m just playing with it and trying to make stuff that is appealing to the eyes.

It’s a fairly simple process but it has to be done right so that:
1. you don’t hurt the cows
2. you don’t hurt yourself.

And that is something that I relate back to life. If we live life in a healthy way we should also concentrate on not hurting other people and not hurting ourselves. When I took those two guidelines into consideration my life drastically changed. I used to be selfish, only though of me, myself and I. But what did I gain by being this way? Absolutely nothing. People don’t want to get to know people that just talk about themselves but rather people want to get to know people that have lived, that have seen things, that have experience and want to share rather than impose.

Let it Snow!

Snow at the beginning of October? Yes! Snow at the beginning of October!

The weather has been pretty gloomy, I haven’t seen the sun for over 10 days. It all started with rain. Rain that caused a swimming pool in the yard then it froze leading to ice and snow.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like snow but I prefer snow when the sun is out as well. As I mentioned, it’s been very gloomy, dark and I would even describe it as depressing.  Snow, snow, snow and more snow, hey! Let is snow! Let it snow! Let is sno-oh-o!

Winter is not here yet, I refuse to accept that! I’m a strong believer of Fall, a time for pumpkin pie, turkey, stuffing and fresh veggies. This year the fresh veggies are a bit different, we have sweet carrots (because they froze), frozen tomatoes and potatoes that are still in the garden because we can’t get them under all that snow.

Is teasing a sin?

Oh tough questions! Here is what I found in my research. If you don’t feel like reading and just want to get straight to the point I suggest you just read the last quote from Forerunner Commentarymakes one think.

  1. Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “I am only joking!”Proverbs 26:18-19
  2. tumblr_n6y6p3voeo1rqxd5ko1_1280Children were mocking and teasing Elisha, and 2 bears came out and mauled them. See 2 Kings 2:23-24
  3. Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered. Proverbs 11:13
  4. Be careful about what you say. Don’t say something without thinking. See Proverbs 29:11
  5. No foul word should ever cross your lips; let your words be for the improvement of others, as occasion offers, and do good to your listeners; Ephesians 4:29
  6. Don’t speak foolishness, no innuendo, no swearing or rude jokes, instead be thankful.See Ephesians 5:4
  7. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right.James 3:10
  8. There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothersProverbs 6:16-19

No rest for Haitians

I can’t bare the thought of being in a safe home not needing to worry about my family while everyone in Haiti is preparing to take cover. My heart is completely torn apart.

I really didn’t think I left my heart in Haiti until I went to WYD. Haitians are very patriotic so whenever I spotted one walking around I went out of my way to speak with them in their own language. The more I spoke with them the more I fell in love with the country again. I lost a lot of my Haitian Créole but I could still hold a basic conversation with them.

It was always great to see their reaction!

Eh! Kijan nou ye?
Nou byen….  ou pale Kreyol?????

Hey! How are you?
We’re fine…. you speak Créole?????

Their reaction was like why is this white woman speaking our language? It just doesn’t make sense! We’ve been caught as we can’t talk in the secret of our language. Continue reading “No rest for Haitians”

Australia!!!

Aye mate!

Ok!!!!! I have some super great news for you! It is official! I’m going to Australia in January!!!!!!

kangaroo-under-line

As many of you know I’ve been discerning religious life for a while and have many fears about taking the next step. To help me with this I decided (with the help of God) to join something called NET (National Evangelization Team).

This peer to peer, value-driven ministry is very effective because it offers a radical alternative to what is offered by society at present. NET teams bring their own positive stories, struggles, their willingness to listen and relate on a youthful level, this is indispensable.

As a member of NET I will deepen my faith, strengthen my relationship with God all by sharing the Gospel with others. What better way to discern religious life than with other young adults?  Continue reading “Australia!!!”

On a New Journey all the Time

After a great weekend full of excitement I am now back waiting at the bus station for a new adventure. I always love spending time with family but when it comes time to leave it’s always bitter sweet. I love my work up north but I also love my family, if only I could have both.

IMG_0872.JPG
A picture I took about a month ago. Fall is here!

I only have a few months left in the north… yep you read that right. It is finally official that I will be leaving my work in the north. Another bitter sweet decision but definitely another decision I took with the help of God. I love my time in the north, I love the people, the different culture, nature and even the animals. On a side note when I came down to the city the other day I saw a moose!  Continue reading “On a New Journey all the Time”
